Ninh Thuan in One Day: The Essential Route

The One-Day Reality

One day in Ninh Thuan means choosing. You can't see everything, but you can get a solid introduction: ancient Cham culture, beach time, and a traditional craft village.

This itinerary assumes you're staying in or near Phan Rang, have a motorbike or car, and are willing to start early.

Total distance: ~60km Duration: 8am-6pm Budget: 200-400k VND/person (entry fees, meals, gas)

The Route

8:00am - Po Klong Garai Tower

Start at the most impressive Cham tower complex in Ninh Thuan. It's 7km west of Phan Rang on a small hill.

  • Time needed: 1 hour
  • Entry: 20k VND
  • What to see: Main tower with Shiva linga, smaller auxiliary towers, panoramic views of vineyards and dry landscape
  • Tip: Arrive early for softer light and fewer tour groups

9:30am - Bau Truc Pottery Village

From Po Klong Garai, head north ~15km to Bau Truc, Vietnam's oldest pottery village (over 500 years).

  • Time needed: 1.5 hours
  • Entry: Free (pay if you buy pottery)
  • What to see: Women hand-building pots without wheels, traditional open-fire kilns, showrooms with finished pottery
  • Tip: Ask to watch the process. Some workshops welcome visitors. Don't rush — this is the cultural heart of Cham craft tradition.

11:30am - Lunch in Phan Rang

Head back to Phan Rang for lunch. Two options:

  • Bánh căn: Small savory rice pancakes, Ninh Thuan's signature street food. Try Bánh Căn Cô Ba on Thống Nhất street (~30-50k/person)
  • Seafood: Fresh grilled fish at a local restaurant near the market (~80-150k/person)

1:00pm - Ninh Chu Beach

Drive 5km east to Ninh Chu Beach for the afternoon.

  • Time needed: 2-3 hours
  • Entry: Free
  • What to do: Swim, relax, rent a beach chair (~30-50k), eat fresh seafood at beachfront restaurants
  • Tip: North end of the beach (near the rocky outcrop) is quieter. South end has more restaurants and activity.

4:00pm - Ca Na Beach (Optional Extension)

If you have energy and time, drive 30km south to Ca Na for sunset. The coastal road is scenic, and Ca Na has dramatic rock formations.

  • Adds: 1.5 hours round trip + time at beach
  • Skip if: You'd rather have a relaxed afternoon at Ninh Chu

5:30-6:00pm - Return to Phan Rang

Head back to Phan Rang for dinner. Try:

  • Bánh xèo (savory crepe): Crispy rice pancake filled with shrimp and pork (~40-60k)
  • Lẩu cá (fish hotpot): If you want a bigger meal (~150-200k/person)

Compact Version (If You Start Late)

Started after 9am? Drop Bau Truc and focus on:

  • Po Klong Garai (9:30-10:30am)
  • Early lunch in Phan Rang (11am)
  • Ninh Chu Beach for the afternoon (12pm-5pm)

What You're Missing

This route skips:

  • Vinh Hy Bay (too far for one day)
  • Nui Chua National Park (requires a full day or overnight)
  • Po Rome Tower (smaller than Po Klong Garai, redundant in one day)
  • Vineyards (interesting but not essential unless you're specifically into wine/agriculture)

If you have 2-3 days, come back for these.

Transportation

Motorbike (recommended):

  • Rental: 100-150k/day in Phan Rang
  • Gives flexibility to stop for photos, adjust timing

Car with driver:

  • ~800k-1.2M VND for the day
  • Book through your hotel/homestay
  • Less flexible, but comfortable if you don't ride

Grab/taxi:

  • Possible but expensive for a full day (~1-1.5M VND)
  • Not ideal for multiple stops

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen and hat (brutal midday sun)
  • Swimwear and towel (for Ninh Chu)
  • Cash (many places don't take cards)
  • Motorbike license (if renting)
  • Water bottle

Weather Considerations

Dry season (January-August): Perfect for this itinerary. Expect sun and heat.

Rainy season (September-December): Beach time may be less appealing, but towers and Bau Truc are still good. Check forecasts.

Is One Day Enough?

Honestly? No. But if one day is all you have, this route gives you:

  • Iconic Cham architecture
  • Traditional craft culture
  • Beach relaxation
  • Local food

It's a solid sampler. If you like it, come back for 3-5 days and go deeper.

Extending to Two Days

If you can swing two days, add:

  • Day 2: Vinh Hy Bay for snorkeling/swimming, then Ca Na sunset
  • Or: Nui Chua National Park trek to Hang Rai (requires guide)

This gives you both cultural and nature highlights without rushing.
